Heather and Paul McCartney Make Plea to End Canadian Seal Slaughter

Heather and Paul McCartney Bring Hope, and a Media Spotlight, to Canada's Seals

The HSUS
By Rebecca Aldworth

On Thursday, I was privileged to stand on the spectacular ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence with two of the most dedicated and visible animal protectionists in the world—Heather and Paul McCartney. They came to the seal nursery to draw world attention to the cruel and needless seal slaughter that will take place just weeks from today.

For the past seven years, I have gone to the ice floes to document the commercial seal hunt at close range—observing horrific acts of cruelty. But today was a different kind of visit. It was a celebration of what is, to me and to the hundreds of tourists who visit the ice floes each year, the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth.

Dennis Weaver (a vegetarian and environmentalist) Passed Away Friday

From Yahoo News:

'Gunsmoke' Actor Dennis Weaver Dies

Dennis Weaver, an actor with a Midwestern twang who played stiff-legged Chester the deputy on "Gunsmoke" and the cowboy cop hero in "McCloud," has died. He was 81.

Weaver died Friday from complications of cancer at his home in Ridgway, in southwestern Colorado, his publicist, Julian Myers, announced Monday.

Off-screen, Weaver served as president of the Screen Actors Guild and was a vegetarian and activist for environmental and charitable causes.

He served as president of Love Is Feeding Everyone, which fed 150,000 needy people a week in Los Angeles County. He founded the Institute of Ecolonomics, which sought solutions to economic and environmental problems. He spoke at the United Nations and Congress, as well as to college students and school children about fighting pollution.

His "Earthship" home was the most visible of Weaver's crusades. He and his wife, Gerry, built the solar-powered Colorado dwelling out of recycled tires and cans. The thick walls helped keep the inside temperature even year-round.

"When the garbage man comes," Jay Leno once quipped, "how does he know where the garbage begins and the house ends?"

Weaver responded: "If we get into the mind-set of saving rather than wasting and utilizing other materials, we can save the Earth."

Weaver is survived by his wife; sons Rick, Robby and Rusty; and three grandchildren.

Action Alert!

Action Alert from the Organic Consumers Association:
Congress Poised to Pass Bill Taking Away Right to Know What's in Your Food
Tell your Congressman or Congresswoman to vote "No" on House of Representatives Bill H.R. 4167, the "National Uniformity for Food Act"

The House of Representatives will vote this week on a controversial "national food uniformity" labeling law that will take away local government and states' power to require food safety food labels such as those required in California and other states on foods or beverages that are likely to cause cancer, birth defects, allergic reactions, or mercury poisoning. This bill would also prevent citizens in local municipalities and states from passing laws requiring that genetically engineered foods and ingredients such as Monsanto's recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) be labeled.

The House will vote March 2, 2006 on a bill that would gut state food safety and labeling laws. H.R. 4167, the "National Uniformity for Food Act," lowers the bar on food safety by overturning state food safety laws that are not "identical" to federal law. Hundreds of state laws and regulations are at risk, including those governing the safety of milk, fish, and shellfish. The bill is being pushed by large supermarket chains and food manufacturers, spearheaded by the powerful Grocery Manufacturers of America.

Big food corporations and the biotech industry understand that consumers are more and more concerned about food safety, genetic engineering, and chemical-intensive agriculture, and are reading labels more closely. They understand that pesticide and mercury residues and hazardous technologies such as genetic engineering and food irradiation will be rejected if there are truthful labels required on food products. Industry-sponsored H.R. 4167 is gaining momentum and must be stopped! Act now! Preserve local and regional democracy and protect yourself and your family from unsafe food by sending an email or calling your Representative and urging them to vote "No" on H.R. 4167.

Please Take Action Now--Send a Message to Your Congress Member in the House of Representatives to Vote "No" on H.R. 4167

Two Good Reasons to go Vegetarian: The Lenten Season and Bird Flu

From webindia123

As a precaution against bird flu, Jet Airways today said that it is serving with immediate effect vegetarian meals and snacks on its flights. ...

Also from the Times of India:

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The bird flu scare is impelling Christians to religiously observe the 50-day Lent, a period of frugality beginning on February 27 leading up to Easter, by becoming pure vegetarians, according to several members of the community.

What are Carobelles?

I just read about these raw, organic, vegan chocolate-like health-food treats... Sounds too good to be true!

Some info from their website:

Carobelles contain mega-energy calories that store in the body as fuel to propel you through your day unlike the guilt filled, fattening, empty calories found in typical sweets and chocolates.

• Carob replaces cacao so there is no caffeine with the great antioxidants.
• Raw ingredients mean they are enzyme rich because they are not cooked and have no hydrogenated oils.
• Organic ingredients mean they are free of chemicals, Non-GMO, and gentle on our planet due to sustainable farming practices.
• Vegan or no Animal ingredients mean they contain no dairy, no preservatives, no fillers or binders.
• There is also no wheat or gluten.
